Here we are, the slowly moving between snow and grass: Mud season. We all know the disappointment that sweeps over us as the temperatures are pleasant, but the trails are not ready for traffic, and the dirt roads will swallow a car in a mire of sloppy mud. Mud season doesn’t have to mean a lack of recreation!

The Green Mountain Club has an excellent blog post regarding Mud Season in VT, including an explanation of mud season, suggestions of where to hike, and info regarding trail closures. https://www.greenmountainclub.org/hiking/mud-season/

Main takeaways include:

  • Thawing occurs for multiple months: starting in March and lasting until late May/early June, depending on elevation and weather.
  • Hiking in mud season causes damage when excessive foot traffic on oversaturated trails compacts soil, which affects the ability of the soil to handle water and the ability of plants to root in the soil. Skirting the mud puddles tramples vegetation, widens trails and causes
  • It is requested that hikers avoid closed trails (many state forest trails) and trails with mud, even if not officially closed. BUT, There are many suggestions for lower elevation trails or trails on durable surfaces to get you outside and recreating!

Other notes:

  • As always, make sure you are prepared for the conditions – temperatures can be deceptively warm at times, but it is still hypothermia weather. Bring appropriate layers.
  • Durable footwear is critical – if you encounter puddles, walk through them rather than around to prevent widening trails.
  • Know when to turn back if you encounter muddy conditions!
